WHAT WE DO

International Animal Rescue (IAR) Costa Rica, previously known as Refuge for Wildlife, was established 20 years ago to help protect the wildlife of Costa Rica. As residential and commercial development has grown, electrocutions have become the main factor driving rescues with over two-thirds of howler monkey related incidents a direct result of electrocution.

RESCUE

With a 24-hour wildlife emergency hotline, our rescue team is trained to use specialist equipment to rescue animals that would otherwise die without assistance.

REHABILITATE

At the IAR Costa Rica Clinic, our team of veterinary professionals and volunteers provides immediate and long-term medical attention. The majority of our patients are electrical burn survivors requiring specialized medical treatment and intensive care, including lengthy rehabilitation and essential survival skill development.

RELEASE

Our goal for every animal that arrives at IAR Costa Rica, is to return them to the jungle as quickly as possible. Releases are done in heavily forested areas far from negative human impact, such as deforestation, unsafe electricity, roads, and pets.

SANCTUARY

For those animals we can't release due to injury or consequences of pet trade, we provide a safe and nurturing space at our sanctuary. Here, they receive lifelong care and support, ensuring they live in comfort and safety.

IMPORTANT:

The data in the following map represents the number of wildlife accidents, most of them from ACT (Area de Conservación Tempisque) in which, we have all the information of the unfortunate incident (date and time, animal involved, exact pin location, description of the incident, pole number, photos of the animal, photos of the transformer, and photos of its surroundings). This number does not represent the total number of calls received regarding wildlife incidents, or the total number of animals that arrive at our center.

PROTECTING COSTA RICA’S WILDLIFE

Wildlife in Costa Rica are suffering gruesome deaths due to unsafe power distribution. We want to end this crisis and Stop the Shocks!

HELP US COLLECT DATA
