Refuge for Wildlife and ICE Work Together to “Stop the Shocks”

On Tuesday May 3rd 2016, ICE installed several wildlife protection kits along the main road of Playa Guiones for the Nosara “Stop the Shocks” Program. Refuge for Wildlife purchased these kits through donations from the public and a generous grant received several months ago. Lisa Foley and Thierry, Mael & Martine Von Der Weid donated more than $2700USD to have 3 dangerous high voltage transformers insulated along the main road by Cafe de Paris, including a transformer which has electrocuted several monkeys in the past months. We also

received a $2500USD grant from the Pegasus Foundation which paid to insulate several dangerous transformers near Giardino Tropical which has been an area of high monkey electrocutions for years. Because these transformers are high voltage and very complicated, the cost of insulating these is very high. Without the generosity of Lisa, Theirry, Mael, Martine and the Pegasus Foundation, these transformers might have continued to kill monkeys for many more years. It is because of their generosity and concern for wildlife safety that our howler troops will now be able to travel in these areas without risk of injury or death.  Thank you! Thank you to the Samara team – Alfonso Hernández, Eddie Acosta, Joel Jiron, Rodolfo Ugarte, Elberth Zuñiga, Rafael Angel Porras, and their manager Félix Pedro Medina! Our Nosara and Samara ICE teams are dedicated to helping us save the monkeys and have been working with Refuge for Wildlife by volunteering their time and expertise to install wildlife protection kits. These hard working men truly care about our wildlife and often help us during their breaks and days off. We could not make our transformers safe without them so we really appreciate all the help they have given us over the years.

Refuge for Wildlife recently had the opportunity to raise another $10,000 for the Stop the Shocks program. Through the generosity of the community we raised $5000 in just 5 days and that donation was matched by a generous donor who would like to remain anonymous. So in addition to the $5000 worth of equipment that was installed May 3rd, we have another $10,000 that will be used to insulate more transformers in the area – starting with the most dangerous. In the upcoming months, ICE will be installing this equipment and working with Refuge for Wildlife to help save the monkeys and “Stop the Shocks”. So when you see ICE working on the transformers, please say “Thank You” because we could not save our monkeys without their help and we are all truly grateful! En el 3 de Mayo 2016, ICE instaló varios kits de protección de vida silvestre en la carretera principal de Playa Guiones para el Nosara programa “Stop the Shocks”. Refuge for Wildlife compró estos kits con donaciones del público y a una generosa subvención recibida hace varios meses. Lisa Foley y Thierry, Mael y Martine Von Der Weid donado más de $ 2700USD para tener 3 transformadores de alta voltaje peligrosos aislados a lo largo de la carretera principal por el Café de París, incluyendo un transformador que ha electrocutado varios monos en los últimos meses. También recibimos una subvención de $ 2500USD de la Fundación Pegasus que pagó para aislar varios transformadores peligrosas cerca de Giardino tropical que ha sido un área de electrocuciones altas mono durante años. Debido a que estos transformadores son de alta tensión y muy complicado, el costo de estos aislante es muy alto. Sin la generosidad de Lisa, Theirry, Mael, Martine y la Fundación Pegasus, estos transformadores podrían haber continuado matando monos durante muchos más años. Es a causa de su generosidad y preocupación por la seguridad de la vida silvestre que nuestras tropas aulladores ahora podrán viajar en estas áreas sin riesgo de lesión o muerte. ¡Gracias! Refugio de Vida Silvestre recientemente tuvo la oportunidad de recaudar fondos otros $ 10,000 para el programa de “Stop the Shocks”. En los próximos meses, ICE va a instalar este equipo y el trabajo con el Refugio de Vida Silvestre a ayudar a salvar a los monos y “Detener los choques”. Así que cuando ves ICE trabajando en los transformadores, por favor, decir “Gracias” porque no podíamos guardar nuestros monos sin su ayuda y todos estamos muy agradecidos!
