Loss of Mario
We are very sorry to report the loss of Mario who had bravely fought hard to survive the electrocution injuries he endured as an infant. Mario had been making incredible progress with his rehabilitation and we considered him to be a miracle survivor because he overcame so much. When he was only a newborn, Mario’s mother was electrocuted and killed as he held tightly onto your stomach. Mario was so young and fragile that we did not think he would survive. His tail was very badly damaged, needed to be amputated completely, and due to the location of the injury, internal damage from the electrical shock was likely. But against all odds, Mario spent the last two years with us growing up healthy and happy with the other monkeys in Mango Troop. He quickly gained a lot of confidence and adapted to his disability like a pro. He was an incredibly joyful monkey that loved to jump and play and snuggle up with his best friend, Liza.
Sadly, last month, Mario suddenly became ill and required intensive veterinary care. Although our veterinary staff did everything they could to help Mario, he died of multi-system organ failure with damage to his lungs, liver, and heart specifically. The electrocution that Mario suffered two years ago meant that he was more susceptible to infections and his organs became more fragile as his body tried to fight the illness.
Although we are deeply saddened by the loss of Mario, we will fondly remember his fighting spirit and how he lived each day excited to play with his friends. Mango Troop will miss him.
