International Animal Rescue (IAR) Costa Rica, previously known as Refuge for Wildlife, was established 20 years ago to help protect the wildlife of Costa Rica. As residential and commercial development has grown, electrocutions have become the main factor driving rescues with over two-thirds of howler monkey related incidents a direct result of electrocution.
With a 24-hour wildlife emergency hotline, our rescue team is trained to use specialist equipment to rescue animals that would otherwise die without assistance.
At the IAR Costa Rica Clinic, our team of veterinary professionals and volunteers provides immediate and long-term medical attention. The majority of our patients are electrical burn survivors requiring specialized medical treatment and intensive care, including lengthy rehabilitation and essential survival skill development.
Our goal for every animal that arrives at IAR Costa Rica, is to return them to the jungle as quickly as possible. Releases are done in heavily forested areas far from negative human impact, such as deforestation, unsafe electricity, roads, and pets.
If you are curious about the local wildlife, an Educational Visit is the perfect way to find out more. During your visit, you and your family will get a unique opportunity to learn about Costa Rican wildlife and some of the challenges they face.
Our volunteer program is designed to be rewarding, educational, and fun. We strive to make sure that you will learn as much as possible about the magnificent wildlife of Costa Rica and how to help prevent negative human impact.
Your donation provides necessary food, shelter, medical expenses, and dedicated staff to care for our rescued wildlife. We care for a large variety of wildlife including parrots, owls, raccoons, pizotes, squirrels, anteaters, opossums, iguanas, and howler monkeys.
